Our Livestock
An organic beef farm at heart, Burtley is home to a 200 organic pedigree South Devon, Hereford and Simmental Cows.

Pedigree Cattle
Our 200 strong herd calves in the spring, meaning the cows and their young calves go straight out to grass where they stay together for nine months growing strong from their mothers’ rich milk.
The calves are then weaned from their mothers during the winter and return out to grass for a second summer of grazing to grow and finish extensively, giving our beef a richer, more tender and flavoursome quality.

Quality Organic Produce
Burtley is a regular and longstanding supplier of organic beef to Waitrose, and now offer our high quality beef boxes directly to the public too.
Burtley is FABBL Farm assured, RSPCA Freedom Foods monitored and certified by Organic Farmers and Growers.
Hereford Cows
The Hereford cow, a British Breed, is thought to be founded on the draught Ox descended from the small red cattle of Roman Briton and a large Welsh breed from the border of England and Wales.
It’s temperament is more docile allowing easier handling than some other cattle breeds. Its meat quality is very good and known for 'marbling' (intramuscular fat).
Simmental Cows
Simmental cattle are a versatile breed of cattle originating in the valley of the Simme River, in the Bernese Oberland of western Switzerland.
They are probably the most genuine “dual” purpose breed that can be crossed successfully with any other breed and produce cows which are extremely milky, fertile, docile and with great natural mothering instincts.
South Devon Cows
The South Devon is the largest of the native British cattle breeds and is well known for its maternal and beef qualities.
They are believed to have descended from the large red cattle of Normandy which were imported during the Norman invasion of England.
